It is about 20 lbs and made to stay on your desk so has to be called a "Desktop" but is really like a laptop mounted in a rearward tiltable stand. It will appeal to many but not all I'm sure.Perhaps a better description would be a monitor with a computer built into the back of it, but however you describe it, it is pretty slick and works smoothly. 64 bit processor & OS Seems to use all notebook/laptop style components and parts in order to fit the size and thin format. Has a couple of new USB 3.0 ports but more 2.0 for some reason. USB 3.0 is backward compatable so why not all great V3.0? 1TB hard drive turning at 7200 rpm NOTE that they list the wrong processor in the product features and the actual processor installed is the 3rd Generation Intel Core i3-3220 Processor... NOT the Intel Core i3-3110M as listed this date. (Amazon notified and "Product Features" should be corrected at some point) Also ignore the r eference to "Solid-State Drive" as this version does not have SSD and HP says it is not an option with this Mother Board. Best to view the actual PDF spec/info page Amazon provided a link for above to get info right from HP For those worried about the user interface with Windows 8 and the tablet "apps" look... a quick double touch of the "desktop app" on the start screen and you have your normal Windows desktop to work in as you are used to using. And that has the touch screen feature working on it also. You can take your time and work out how you use and want to use the start screen that looks like a tablet or smartphone screen. No need to panic about steep learning curve in order to just use your new computer. Touchsceen works a treat and is the "capacitive" type so you need to use either your bare fingers or a capacitive type stylus to use it. I suggest a stylus to avoid cleaning the beautiful edge to edge glass all the time. ( view is not edge to edge, but outer frame except for bottom speaker grill is glass covered as well) While this model is not full HD with it's 1600 x 900 resolution (Intel 2500 onboard video chip) it presents the screen very well and is bright and colorful using LED lighting. You can of course watch your DVDs on it and they look just fine, just not full High Definition quality. The DVD player/burner is not BluRay, but HP calls the player a "SuperMulti DVD Writer Drive" with special higher capacity writing for dual-layer media One item that might take some getting used to is that the DVD/CD player is mounted on the upper right side edge of the Envy 20 so it ends up standing on edge unlike what you might be used to. You do not have gravity to help put the disk in and must fiddle a bit in order to lock the media in place without it slipping away from you. (picture a laptop standing on it's front edge) Nothing you can't get used to, but very diff erent from using horizontal player drawer we are used to. Front firing stereo speakers provide good sound for music and movie sound, but this comes with BlueTooth option so you can also transmit sound to BlueTooth speakers for even better sound. And of course there is 3.5mm outlet for using external speakers or headphones as you like. AND... it's two way BlueTooth so you can also pair your smartphone or tablet to it and have sound and video played through your new HP Envy All and all a very nice computer in a futuristic design, even with this lower end processor the advancements make by Intel have it working at good speed so will handle most normal computing needs in short order. This also is available with the i5 and i7 chip and many other options so be sure to check them out before you buy. If you are used to using a smartphone or tablet you will not have any problem even on first use, if you only have used regular PC do not worry, it wi ll come to you very quickly and don't forget one tap and you have your old familiar Windows desktop view to use. PLUS, you get a BlueTooth wireless full keyboard and mouse with it that works right along with the touch screen so inputs are "as you wish" without hassle or making changes first. If this was the Envy version with full HD 1920 x 1080 , BluRay player, top end processor & Intel HD Graphics 4000 option, I would give it 5 starts "I love it" but being the basic model I have to give it 4 starts "I like it" but no operational problems found in the past week of using it every day. Only hardware item that falls short for me so far is the installed 1.0 MP Webcam...(listed in device manager) Called "HP TrueVision HD Webcam" but seems pretty low res for that title even if it will do 720 vertical screen resolution. Yes, it's average MP for notebooks and no doubt speeds up Skype with lower system and transmission demands but feel it could be double t hat and still be fast on Internet. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful By This review is from: HP Envy 20-d030 TouchSmart All-in-One Desktop (Personal Computers) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?) I have the advantage of having the previous generation of HP's desktop touchscreen computer the "HP TouchSmart PC" and there have indeed been many improvements in this second generation the "HP ENVY 20 TouchSmart PC". First an improved responsiveness and with Windows 8, many additional functions available from the touchscreen. The physical design is also much improved: 1. The screen is completely flat when viewed head on instead of a front bezel that protruded from thee touchscreen in the earlier model, 2. The PC stands on a sturdier and flatter base instead of the easel/calendar sort of rear leg that characterized the earlier model. 3. The keyboard is appropriately sloped without raising it on the (still flimsy) thin plastic bottom legs which fractured on my previous model. 4. The basic software setup took under 10 minutes till I was able to use the PC and access the Internet. 5. The robustness of the new sound system is apparent compared with the previous model. 6. 2 USB 3.0 Ports and 4 USB 2.0 ports are available from the side panel and back respectively. My two minor nits (depending upon your point of view) with this excellent machine are: 1. There is no (visible) HDMI support which would allow a television tuner or display of my Raspberry PI Computer's Output. 2. Because of the UEFI provision in this system it is virtually impossible to dual boot a Linux operating system (I will partially remedy this lack by installing UBUNTU on Oracle's Virtual Box application). Also the CD/DVD drive is thin and temperamental (at least takes some getting used to) as a result of HP's extremely flat form factor. --Ira Laefsky MSE (Computer Engineering) /MBA Information Technology Consultant previously on the Senior Consulting Staff of Digital Equipment Corporation and Arthur D. This review is from: HP Envy 20-d030 TouchSmart All-in-One Desktop (Personal Computers) I have had just about every brand of computer on the market. I have owned a Dell, Compaq, Acer, Asus, HP. I have to say I favor the HP/Compaq computers. They are easy to operate and navigate. I LOVE Windows 8 and would recommend it to anyone. The large screen makes the reading requirements of school easier. It is crystal clear and bright. The touchscreen is great and easy to navigate as well. I am in search of screen protector so I am not leaving fingerprints on the monitor, I would recommend a stylus. |
